Here some diagnostic suggestions: First check your alternator drive belt. If it's tight and not cracked or slipping and squealing, the belt is probably OK. Next check your battery. Make sure the terminals are not loose. If your battery is more than four years old, replace it even if it still works. It won't for long. If it's newer than that, assume it to be OK unless it was a real cheap one in the first place. If you still have the problem and your car has more than 60,000 miles, replace the alternator. That's because if it's not dead, it will be before too long. If you have less than 60,000 miles on your car, assume the alternator to be OK, and assume your voltage regulator has bit the dust and replace it, unless it's built inside the alternator. In that case replace the alternator.
If you don't want to replace components that may still have a little life left, go pay your local mechanic a couple hundred dollars to diagnose the problem. Now, that's about what you'll pay for a new battery, voltage regulator and remanufactured alternator, in other words for a whole new electrical system, if you buy the alternator and regulator online and replace them yourself.
